Wharton Defeats King, Moves On

The Wharton Wildcats defeated the King Lions 50-31 in the second round of the SEBA Summer League playoffs.

Early in the first quarter, Xavier Owens and Chase Litton found their rhythm. Both Owens and Litton had 6 points, splitting the teams 12 first quarter points.
CJ McGill saw his first action against King since injuring his ankle in the second game earlier this month.

Jadarian Greene, back from his ankle injury, also got back into the swing of things with some strong minutes.

Wharton headed into the final quarter with its biggest lead of the night.

The hustle of Drake Williams helped the Wildcats stretch their lead even more and put the game out of reach for good. Williams excited the crowd with a thunderous block, two big rebounds and added two points from the line during the run.

The win moves the Wildcats into the semifinals.

Wildcats Wrap Up Summer League Season Play

The Wharton Wildcats win three of four summer league games on consecutive nights and finish 6-4.

On Wednesday night, Wharton played host to Tampa Bay Tech and Newsome High School.

The Wildcats defeated Tampa Bay Tech and Newsome 40-34 and 44-40 respectively.

The following night the Wildcats trekked down to Dale Mabry to face First Baptist Christian - Brandon and Jesuit.

In the first game, Wharton's offense got back on track behind the perimeter shooting of Sir Patrick Reynolds. Reynolds caught fire from long range and lead Wharton to the 64-53 victory.

In the final game, the Jesuit Tigers handed Wharton its fourth loss in a turnover heavy game 40-39.

The Wildcats struggled with ball security. A late Wharton surge fueled once again by Reynold's long ball wasn't enough to recover from the sloppy play.

Next up for Wharton, the SEBA Summer League playoffs starting early next week.

Wildcats Split Summer League Games

The Wharton Wildcats split a pair of summer league games, losing to Bloomingdale before defeating Plant City to improve to 5-3.

The first game featured a district preview, Bloomingdale defeated Wharton 59-57.

The Bulls scored the game's first 13 points before Xavier Owens' 3-point play at the 5:42 mark of the first quarter finally got the Wildcats on the board.

The Wildcats field goal percentage in the first half was as dismal as the weather outside.

Continual lapses in the defense led to Bloomingdale layups and uncontested short range jumpers.

Trailing 36-18 at the half, Wharton outscored Bloomingdale 22-10 to draw within six points to start the fourth quarter.

Wharton was unable to captilize down the stretch in the fourth quarter. Xavier Owens' dunk and DaVonte Lamar's layup  in the final 10 seconds were not enough to close the gap.

In the Wildcats second contest, Wharton topped Plant City 58-47.

Jadarian Greene and Owens helped carry the Wildcats to a 21-15 lead at the end of the first.

The enthusiasm and determination missing in the early quarters of the first contest had been evaporated. The proof being a thunderous Owens' dunk in the closing seconds of the quarter.

However, the Raiders hot-handed attack kept Wharton from pulling away.

Plant City even managed to take a 1-point lead midway through the second on a 1-for-2 free throw.

Wharton would retake the lead after Owens' putback a Chase Litton miss.

Moments later, Owens hit a running jumper to beat the buzzer after forcing the steal to end the first half.

In the third, Plant City continued to prevent Wharton from building anymore than a 5-point lead.

The Wildcats held the slim 41-38 lead heading into the fourth.

After the quick break, the Wildcats finally were able to put enough distance between them and Plant City on way to securing the win.

The split makes Wharton's SEBA Summer League record 5-3 thus far with two more regular season games coming this Wednesday at Wharton.

Wharton Defeated By Gibbs, Tampa Prep

Wildcats drop a pair, stumble to 4-2 after losses to Gibbs, Tampa Prep.

The shorthanded Wildcats were without CJ McGill for both contests. The point guard suffered a sprained ankle in last nights win over Wiregrass Ranch.

In the first game the Wildcats fell to Gibbs in a defensive barn burner 34-30.

Points were hard to come by all game long. The score was tied at 4 at the end of the first quarter and Gibbs held the 16-12 advantage at halftime.

Chase Litton's put back made it 30-28 giving Wharton its first lead since 2-0 in the games opening moments.

Xavier Owens' offensive efforts were enough to keep the Wildcats within a possession of tying the game but down the stretch it was Gibbs who made enough plays to secure the win.

The second game pitted Wharton and Tampa Prep. The Terps outlasted the Wildcats 60-49 in an up and down, fast-paced contest.

Tampa Prep jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead but Wharton responded with a run of its own to take the 16-13 lead after the first.

Xavier Owens continued his dominance in the paint but as the game progressed the Wildcats muscle just simply ran out of gas.

Wharton managed to trim the lead five on a Litton put back but as the fatigue set in, the winded Wildcats couldn't execute down the stretch.

The pair of losses drops Wharton to 4-2 overall in the summer league standings.

Wharton Improves to 4-0

The Wildcats continue their winning ways defeating Wiregrass Ranch and King in a pair of summer league games.

In the first game against Wiregrass Ranch, the Wildcats caught fire from behind the arc and hustled their way to a 63-42 victory.

Jereth Kirkland and CJ McGill found their stroke early and often and helped build the lead over the Bulls.

Sir Patrick Reynolds added a couple 3-pointers and even Xavier Owens showed his long range ability by hitting a 3-pointer during the Wildcat run in the third quarter.

Of the Wildcats' nine active players, seven recorded a made 3-point shot.

In Wharton's second game against King, the Wildcats defeated King 55-51 without McGill who suffered an ankle injury in the early game.

Wharton and King traded blows all throughout the first quarter. The Wildcats clung to a 15-11 lead at the end of the first. Chase Litton lead the team in scoring with 9 points and 25 for the game.

In the second, Kings athletic guards continued to find ways to score and took a 1-point lead on a mid range jumper with 3:25 to play in the half.

Dirk Werner's 3-pointer put the Wildcats back on top two possessions later.

King tied the game at 30 with 6:12 to play in the third.

However, Litton baseline jumper sparked a 10-4 Wildcat run to close out the quarter and Wharton led 40-34 to start the fourth.

King immediately cut the deficit in half with a 3-pointer on the opening possession.

Owens found Litton on back to back possessions giving the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game at eight with under five minutes to play.

King's late game surge fell short and Wharton concluded the sweep and improve to 4-0.

'Cats Sweep First Two Summer League Games

The Wharton Wildcats swept its first pair of summer league games, defeating Blake 44-39 and Sickles 39-38.

In the first game against Blake, the Wildcats struggled around the basket early and fell into a quick hole at the end of the first, 12-6.

However, in the second quarter Wharton managed to cut into the deficit with a strong effort on the defensive glass. Jafar Mascoll and Xavier Owens both secured a handful of rebounds during the comeback effort.

After a back and forth physical third quarter, Wharton and Blake headed into the fourth all knotted up 29.

Wharton took a slim 2-point lead with 6:35 to play on a Mascoll jumper. Blake immediately responded on the ensuing possession but Xavier Owens' runner in the lane giving Wharton the 2-point lead again.

Jereth Kirkland's 3-pointer with 4:25 gave the Wildcats their second largest lead of the game, 38-33.

Blake refused to go away.

Powered by last seasons' Hillsborough County Player of the Year Andre Smith, Blake cut the Wildcat lead back to one on a pair of free throws.

With just under a minute to play, Blake again knocked down a free throw to tie it at 39.

Sir Patrick Reynold's 3-pointer broke the tie and put Wharton on top for good. Blake's three points shot hit front iron before running long out of bounds.

Wharton held on to beat the Yellow Jackets 44-39.

The second game consisted of the Wildcats squaring off against county-rival Sickles High School.

Sickles hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game.
Later in the first, Owens stole the ball a bad pass and took it coast to coast to trim the Sickles lead to 3.

Wharton trailed Sickles until late in the second quarter when Chase Litton intercepted a half court pass and took it all the way to the rim before making the layup and drawing the foul.

At the end of the first half, Wharton held the 17-14 advantage.

Owens got what he wanted, when he wanted it all game long. The Gryphon's felt his presence in the paint all game long.

In the second half the Wildcats outside game was jump started when CJ McGill and Kirkland knocked down consecutive three pointers to give Wharton their biggest lead at nine points.

McGill's layup moments later pushed it to 11 with 6:45 to play in the third.
The Wildcats lead 32-24 entering the fourth.

Sickles quickly trimmed their deficit to four on their first two possessions of the fourth. An Owens two-for-one free throw and Patrick jumper pushed it back to eight with 6:25 to play. However, Sickles would go on a 8-0 run over the next 5:10 and tied the game at 36 with 1:15 to play.

After the timeout to slow the run, Litton found Reynolds with the back door pass giving Wharton to 2 point lead. Kirkland added a free throw and Sickles layup wasn't enough to tie the game up in the final seconds.

Wharton defeated Sickles 39-38 capping the nightly sweep of their two opponents.

SEBA Summer League Starts Tonight

The Wharton Wildcats will host two of Hillsborough County's top teams in their first pair of summer league games tonight at Wharton High School.

The first game will feature a rematch of last season's classic between the Wildcats and the Blake Yellow Jackets.

Down 13 heading into the fourth quarter, Coach Tommy Tonelli and his Wildcats clawed their way back into the game with stout defense, intense rebounding and patience on the offensive end. Xavier Owens, AJ Astroth and Damian Dixon all proved they clutch, confident composure by sinking free throw after free throw when the game was on the line.

Wharton tips off against Blake at 6p.m.

The nightcap consists of a Sickles squad who prides themselves on being the top team in the county. Although the rivalry isn't as celebrated as others, the winner of the Wharton/Sickles game usually crowns the top basketball team in Hillsborough County.

Last season, the Gryphons dealt the Wildcats their only loss of the regular season. Tate Wheeler was stripped of the basketball on the baseline in which the Gryphon defender seemed to be the last one to touch it. The referee signaled that it was a Wildcat paw that last touched it and Wharton turned the ball over down three in the final minute. Sickles would knock down a handful of free throws to put the game out of reach.

However, a month later the two teams met again in the Berkeley Holiday tournament championship game.

Wharton outlasted Sickles thanks to the play of the "X-man" Xavier Owens. Highlighting his strong performance was a dunk in which he showed no regard to the Gryphon defender as he leaped up and over the helpless player for the fierce jam igniting the packed crowd.

A full court shot rimmed out and the Wildcats avenged their only loss by defeating Sickles on the neutral floor for the holiday tournament title.

Wharton and Sickles will lock horns at approximately 9p.m.
