Wharton 62, Countryside 57

Wharton shrugs off a slow start to capture consecutive tournament crowns by defeating Countryside-Clearwater 62-57.

Senior Damian Dixon was named the tournamant MVP and junior AJ Astroth's 25-point performance in the finals secured him a spot on the all-tournament team.
The Wildcats finish the 2009 calendar year red-hot. Wharton has won 16 of 17 games and are primed for a strong January. A comeback for the ages, district dominance, avenging the lone loss and an overtime win over a 6A power are the marquee wins that have the state and more surprising the local media mentioning Wharton among the elite.

Wharton 64, Brandon 48

Wharton survives upset bid by rival Brandon and picks up eighth straight victory, 64-48.

AJ Astroth lead Wharton with 20 points. Damian Dixon added 18 and Xavier Owens scored 17.

The opposing Eagles trailed the entire game but managed to pull within one point during the third quarter. They even had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line but could only manage the first of the two.

Brandon got whatever they wanted inside, at times their looks were uncontested.

Wharton managed to pull away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to secure their tenth victory of the season in 11 attempts.

Wheeler Awarded Senior Notable

Seniors are nominated for their over excellence in academics, leadership, citizenship, community service and sports. Their accomplishments will be memorialized in the yearbook.

Congratulations to Tate Wheeler for his hard work over the past four years. Wharton has a huge student population and being that Wheeler is one of twelve award winners is saying something about his character and work ethic.

The proof is overwhelmingly obvious. Coach Tommy Tonelli is not only about developing basketball skills, he is successfully molding teenagers into responsible and hardworking young men and he is making it easier for these players to succeed at the next level. Whether it be on the hardwood, in the work place or in the class room, the Wildcats are winners on and off the court.

Wharton will be back on court tonight when they play host to rival Brandon High School. This will be the Wildcats last home game for the remainder of the calendar year.

Wharton 71, Middleton 45

Nearly every Wharton player records a point as the Wildcats continue their winning streak with defeat of Middleton, 71-45.

Xavier Owens had a big night and Jafar Mascoll had a huge night off the bench.

Mascoll scored off of offensive rebounds, set plays and showed his strength with rebounds and even recorded a couple of blocks.

The Wildcats started slow once again, turning the ball over on a few possessions in the first quarter. However, when the Wildcats jumped to a double-digit lead, they never looked back.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, the starters made their way to the bench, greeted by the applause of the crowd. Coach Tonelli then watched his inexperienced bench players accumulate some very productive minutes.

Wharton cruised to their seventh consecutive win after the shaky first quarter. The Wildcats, now 9-1, play host to the Brandon Eagles this Friday, ending a 4-game home stretch.

Wharton fended off a hot Eagle start the last time both teams met and won 64-43.

Wharton 66, Bloomingdale 49

Wharton survives a feisty Bloomingdale team to increase their winning streak to six games, 66-49.

The Wildcats were nearly plagued by turnover-abundant third quarter but outlasted the Bulls comeback effort. AJ Astroth lead all scorers with 23 points. Freshman CJ McGill added 13.

Wharton jumped out to an 21-8 lead early in the second but Bloomingdale used scrappy play and 3-point shooting to claw their way back into the contest.

After a huge Bulls run to close out the second and begin the third, Bloomingdale managed to lead the game for the first time in the middle of the third.

After both teams traded blows and leads for a couple possessions, Wharton flexed their muscles and pulled away. Astroth, McGill, and Dixon all made steals and lay ups down the stretch and the Wildcats closed the door for good.

Wharton improves to 8-1(4-0) and host the Middleton Tigers tomorrow night for the third straight home game.

Wharton 63, Alonso 42

Wharton shakes off a slow start to win seventh straight, 63-42.

Junior Xavier Owens had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.

Wharton, fresh off their last second victory over Blake, seemed a bit rusty in the opening quarter. Alonso shot the lights out in the first quarter, matching each of Wharton's baskets. The Ravens held a slim two point lead after the first.

The second quarter saw over a half-dozen lead changes. No team held more than a 1 point lead during the stretch of lead changes.

After two back and forth quarters, Wharton began to pull away thanks to their defensive full court pressure.

Senior Tate Wheeler hit a 3 point shot late in the third that seemed to suck the air out of the Ravens for good. Although Alonso continued playing until the final buzzer sounded, Wharton controlled the entire fourth quarter.

The Wildcats set the tone early, forcing consecutive turnovers and cashing in on easy buckets on the other end.

Senior Damian Dixon and junior AJ Astroth struggled early to find their rhythm but once they got in sync, the Wildcats never looked back.

A handful of unforced turnovers kept the game close early but Wharton helped erase those frustrations with hustle and hard work on the defensive side of the ball.

Wharton improves to 7-1 and more importantly 3-0 in the district. Wharton now owns a 5-game winning streak.

Wharton 59, Blake 56

Wharton stuns Blake with double digit comeback in the fourth, 59-56.

Wharton trailed by 11 to start the fourth quarter and as many as 13 late in the third.

Early in the contest, Wharton struggled from the free throw line. Xavier Owens was able to attack the basket and draw the foul possession after possession. However, all but one of his free throws were off the mark and had the 'Cats looking at an 8-point loss at the half.

Frustration compelled the Wildcats as they walked off the floor and into the locker room.

After the intermission, Blake came out as hot as they left. The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 13 points within the first few minutes of the third and Wharton began to look discouraged.

Behind the three-point shooting of Damian Dixon and AJ Astroth the Wildcats were able to chunk away at the lead early in the fourth.

With under three minutes to play, Astroth found himself at the baseline beyond the three-point line and the ball in his hand. Astroth shot the ball over a Blake defender and hit nothing but net. Wharton's bench and followers erupted. The Jackets' lead was cut to just two points.

Blake would continue to fight. The Jackets' point guard would make back to back jump shots with a hand in his face. Clinched fist, muscles flexed the point guard was single-handedly keeping Blake ahead by 6.

On the ensuing possession, Owens came up big with a made basket and the foul. X-man sunk the free throw and put the Wildcats back within striking distance. On the next Wharton possession, Owens would add another bucket, cutting the deficit to just one point.

Blake struggled to find a decent look, forced a tough shot and Wharton rebounded. On the Wildcat possesion, Owens was fouled on the layup attempt. He was sent to the line, hit the first to tie but missed the second.

Blake would rebound on the Owens miss.

Blake swung the ball around the perimeter and then threw the ball back to the top of the key but Dixon telegraphed the pass, tipped the ball away and finished on the other end to give Wharton their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Blake would draw a shooting foul on their next possession but managed only one of two free throws. Dixon rebounded the ball, fouled and was then awarded a one-and-one free throw on the other end.

With 16 seconds to play Dixon sunk both free throws and pushed the Wharton lead to 3. After a Wildcat timeout, Wharton fouled twice to make sure no easy attempt was taken. After the second foul Blake couldn't get the look they wanted and the deep 3-point attempt hit nothing and Wharton pulled off the comeback.

Owens, Dixon and Astroth hit clutch shot after clutch shot down the final stretch and Torres rebounded the missed Jacket shots to inch back into the game. When it mattered the most, Wharton came up big.

As the clock expired the Wharton bench erupted and the players greeted one another at center court. Coach Tommy Tonelli threw his hands up in the air and the Wharton fans jumped in celebration.

Wharton improves to 6-1 (2-0) and has now won four-consecutive contests.

Wharton 66, Plant 51

Wharton lights it up from behind the arch to down Plant, 66-51.

Senior Damian Dixon and junior AJ Astroth shot the lights out, both scoring 24 points. Junior Xavier Owens aided in the win with 2 dunks that helped quiet the crowd and end any Plant comeback efforts.

Plant's Michael Frazier, sophomore, scored a game high 27 points and was the only real offense for Plant. Wharton outscored Plant 10-1 to start the first quarter but quickly responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 17 as the first quarter ended.

Dixon was given the daunting task of guarding the nationally ranked sophomore and frustrated Frazier at times. Plant, stalled on many of their offensive possessions and could not do anything offensively with Frazier on the bench.

On the contrary, Wharton's offense started hot and stayed hot all throughout the contest.

During the second quarter, both Dixon and Astroth capitalized on a handful of three point opportunities and pushed the 'Cats lead to double digits before the end of the first half. Plant only managed to cut their deficit to single digits once as the Wildcats shot their way to their third consecutive victory.

Wharton improves to 5-1 overall but more importantly picks up their second district win in as many attempts. The Wildcats have no time to rest. They will travel to Blake tomorrow night for a showdown the Tampa Tribune is calling a battle between "two of the areas' better teams."

Hammond and the rest of the Wildcats will be back on the hardwood tomorrow night against Plant High School.

December 4, 2009

Wharton 64, Brandon 43

The Wildcats fend off a red-hot Brandon start and continue their winning streak against Brandon, 64-43.

Brandon took a quick 10-4 lead right out of the gates and lead by 13 points early in the game. The Eagles shot nearly 100 percent in the first quarter and held a 27-17 lead late in the second quarter.

After the slow start, the Wildcats used defense to claw their way back in it.

Senior Tate Wheeler got his first start of the season and made the best of his opportunity and helped guide Wharton back with 7 assists.

Junior Xavier Owens, senior Damian Dixon and junior AJ Astroth all turned steals into transition buckets.

After Brandon pushed their lead to 10 at 27-17, Wharton went on a 10-0 to knot the game at 27.

For the next 2 and a half quarters Wharton out scored Brandon 47-17 on their way to their fourth win of the season. Wharton also picks up their first district win of the year.

Wharton will be back in action next week when they travel to South Tampa to play the Plant Panthers.

Wharton 54 , Steinbrenner 18

Wharton makes quick work of Steinbrenner and improves to 3-1 behind a scrappy defensive showing, 54-18.

Both senior Damian Dixon and freshman CJ McGill recorded 5 steals in the first quarter alone. Junior AJ Astroth got down and dirty, spending more time diving after the ball than standing on his own two feet. Junior Jonathan Torres set up his teammates with a couple great passes during the Wharton run.

Junior Xavier Owens put the "X-clamation point" on a dominate first quarter effort with a rim rattling dunk to beat the clock.

Almost ever player on the Wharton roster got first half minutes. Junior Clint Cagle made a few plays in his time on the court, Junior Travaris Hammond accumulated a handful of assists and junior Jadarian Greene had an impressive fast break finish.

No second half letdown for the Wildcats. Wharton held Steinbrenner to 1 field goal in the 3RD and out scored the Warriors 19-2.

Wharton emptied the bench to start the 4TH and cruised to the win. Senior Tate Wheeler kicked off the final quarter with a net-snapping three ball and pushed the 'Cat lead to 52-10.

Despite the lob-sided defeat, the Wildcats have a lot of work to do.

The first 4 minutes of the contest, Wharton only managed 4 points. Turnovers and missed free throws slowed the 'Cats early. Wharton quickly turned up the heat with defensive pressure and the young, inexperienced Warrior squad could not keep up.

Wharton improves to 3-1(0-0) and will travel down I-75 tomorrow night to face rival Brandon. The Eagles will be the first district foe of the season. The game also kicks off a 3 game road trip.

Home Opener Tonight

Wharton faces the brand-new Steinbrenner High School tonight in front of a home audience for the first time this season.

The Wildcats look to improve to 3-1 and right the ship immediately after Tuesday's turnover-stricken performance against Sickles High School.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm.

December 1, 2009

Wharton 48, Sickles 55

Fouls and unforced turnovers plague Wharton as Sickles holds off a late 'Cats' surge to emerge victorious, 55-48.

Senior Damian Dixon led all 'Cats with 13 points but both him and Junior Xavier Owens' efforts at a late game push were cut short when both players fouled out late in the 4TH quarter.

Junior AJ Astroth nearly willed the 'Cats back for the win with the help of freshman CJ McGill's defensive skills but all hopes were quickly singed when an Wildcat inbound pass was tipped out of bounds.

Astroth in bounded from under the Wharton basket and found Wheeler on the play. Wheeler went to reset the ball at the top of the key when a Sickles defender appeared to poke the ball out of bounds. However, the referee on the baseline deemed it Sickles ball despite not being in position to make the call.

Coach Tommy Tonelli disputed the call to no avail and the 'Cats attempt at tying the game with a 3-ball was over before they got the chance.

Intentional fouls and the ensuing free throws inflated the Gryphons' lead and time ran out on the Wildcats.

Everyone of the past 5 meetings between Wharton and Sickles have come down to the wire. The score was tied after the first and second quarters. Sickles held a 1-point lead heading into the fourth. Sickles now holds a 3-game winning streak over Wharton and has won 4 out of the last 5 meetings.

Wharton falls to 2-1 (0-0) and will play in front of their home crowd and the Blue Crew for the first time this season Thursday. The 'Cats play host to Steinbrenner High School.
