Classes In Session, Countdown Begins
by
Joshua Litton
The 2009-2010 school year is officially underway and we are months away from the opening tip. Here's a little tease to get you to November.
**Video moved to top right of side menu under VIDEO LINKS**
Head Coach Tommy Tonelli and the 'Cats will be back in full force in the months to come. The anticipation is causing an uproar throughout Hillsborough County with Tommy T back at Wharton. Not only is the legend back but he has inherited a very, very talented squad with Damian Dixon, AJ Astroth, and Xavier Owens all returning for the Wildcats.
New district, new classification, new seasons, tradition never graduates. The time is now.
Enjoy and as always, Go 'Cats.

Tommy Tonelli Heading Back To Wharton
by
Joshua Litton
Tommy Tonelli is back. After a two year absence Coach Tonelli will return to be the Wharton Wildcat head coach for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year and basketball season.
In the aftermath of the hiring, I don't know who's more upset. The University of South Florida lost a great coach, man, and asset. Coach Tonelli has given countless years as an assistant, the Director of Operations, and as a player. Known for his passing ability, the young Tommy T held the all-time assist record as well as the all-time steals mark during his tenor at USF.
On the other end of the spectrum, this re-hire strikes fear into the hearts of opposing players, students, and fans all across the county and maybe even the state.
During Coach Tonelli's 10 year run at Wharton, in which he started the program back in 1997, Tonelli never had a losing season and compiled a record of 213-72. He captured 3 district titles, and coached the 'Cats to 6 playoff appearances and was a regional finalist in the 2007 season in which his squad accumulated a 29-2 record and saw 4 players move onto the next level. Most notably, Shawn Vanzant and the Butler Bulldogs (Adam Noble, Eckerd, Anthony Gomez, St. Leo, Leonard Simmons, Florida College). Underclassman Anthony Manuel, who played a key role on the '07 squad, also recieved a college scholarship one year later upon graduating.
He has pumped out an impressive resume of college players and his coaching ability and mentoring skills make him one of the best coaches in the state.
Tonelli's re-hire won't be the only new coaching move this year. There has been plenty of action around the rest of the tri-county area.
Both Strawberry Crest and Steinbrenner will obviously be sporting new coaches but Hillsborough, Freedom, Bloomingdale, Durant, Lennard, East Bay, and Chamberlain will all have fresh faces directing their squads this coming year.

Dixon & Astroth Conclude Camp
by
Joshua Litton
AJ Astroth and Damian Dixon concluded camp today. Their squad made it all the way to the semifinals before losing.
The boys will rest up a day before heading back to Tampa on Tuesday, August 4th.
Both Astroth and Dixon survived their grueling schedule and managed to have a little fun while they competed too. Both played extremely well and held their own with the rest of the all-star caliber players who were invited to the camp.
"It was fun for me to go and play everyday against people from all over the country and to experience different styles of basketball. It made me better for this coming season because it showed me that there are players all over the country trying to do the same thing as me which will keep me working hard to reach my goals."
On another note, classes are weeks away from starting which means the countdown to tip-off will be growing with anticipation with every passing day.
